چکیده

Over the years a lot of work has been done on the topic of grammatical picture generation. However, most often such work has disregarded the pragmatic problems of combining different grammatical devices to achieve more complex results and implementing them in an efficient manner. This master’s thesis aims to establish notions and results that make it possible to consider and deal with such issues in a uniform way. This is achieved by introducing concepts of “operations” of two varieties, “progressing operations” to capture iterative refinement and “scene operations” to address the most immediate efficiency concerns. Once the theory surrounding these two operations has been developed the theory for their combination is considered. Finally a suggestion on how ordinary tree-based picture generators can be expressed within this framework is developed. The thesis is concluded with a discussion of the actual impact of the definitions made, including examples especially focused on how the concepts exposed can be exploited to increase the efficiency of implementations.

Evaluation of Attention Bias in Morphine and Methamphetamine Abusers towards Emotional Scenes during Early Abstinence: An Eye-Tracking Study

Introduction: We hypothesized that inappropriate attention during the period of abstinence in individuals with substance use disorder can result in an inadequate perception of emotion and unsuitable reaction to emotional scenes. The main aim of this research was to evaluate the attentional bias towards emotional images in former substance abusers and compare it to healthy adults. Methods:...

Automatic Recognition of Bidimensional Models Learned by Grammatical Inference in Outdoor Scenes

Automatic generation of models from a set of positive and negative samples and a-priori knowledge (if available) is a crucial issue for pattern recognition applications. Grammatical inference can play an important role in this issue since it is one of the methodologies that can be used to generate the set of model classes, where each class consists on the rules to generate the models. In this p...

Learning to talk about events from narrated video in a construction grammar framework

The current research presents a system that learns to understand object names, spatial relation terms and event descriptions from observing narrated action sequences. The system extracts meaning from observed visual scenes by exploiting perceptual primitives related to motion and contact in order to represent events and spatial relations as predicate-argument structures. Learning the mapping be...

Translation and Hybridity in Scenes and Frames Semantics

The present study is a theoretical attempt to illustrate how Fillmore's Scenes and Frames Semantics (SFS) could be employed as a framework to portray the process of understanding and translating hybrid texts. It first reviews the origin of SFS; then it maps SFS onto Nida’s linguistic model of translation process and the Interpretive Theory of Translation; it examines in the next section, withi...

Towards Flexible, Small-Domain Surface Generation: Combining Data-Driven and Grammatical Approaches

As dialog systems are getting more and more ubiquitous, there is an increasing number of application domains for natural language generation, and generation objectives are getting more diverse (e.g., generating informationally dense vs. less complex utterances, as a function of target user and usage situation). Flexible generation is difficult and labourintensive with traditional template-based...
